If you smell gas OUTSIDE a building or in the street:
Contact ATCO Gas Australia - Faults and Emergencies on 13 13 52 (24 hours) to locate and repair the leak.
If you smell gas inside a building and are unsure of the origin act immediately.
Eliminate ignition sources (i.e. no smoking, do not use electrical appliances or switches in the near vicinity) and
If safe to do so:
- Turn off all gas appliances including pilot lights
- Open windows to vent accumulated gas
- Exit building
- Turn off gas at meter position
- Do not re-enter building
- Keep people clear of area around building
- Contact ATCO Gas Australia - Faults and Emergencies on 13 13 52 (24 hours) to locate and repair the leak.
If you smell gas inside a building originating from consumer gas pipework or gas appliances then act immediately:
Eliminate ignition sources (i.e. no smoking, do not use electrical appliances or switches in the near vicinity) and if safe to do so:
- Turn off all gas appliances including pilot lights
- Open windows to vent accumulated gas
- Turn off gas at meter position
- Keep people clear of area
- Contact a licensed gasfitter to rectify the problem. Remember, any person undertaking work involving gas must be appropriately licensed.
WARNING: Gas is a flammable substance. Eliminate ignition sources (i.e. no smoking, do not use electrical appliances or switches or mobile phones in the vicinity of a gas leak)
